Beaches & Old Town

Coast, cliffs, and cobblestones — Lagos highlights from the guidebook.

  • Lagos is known for its coastline, historic streets, beaches, cliffs, and relaxed Algarve atmosphere.
  • Ponta da Piedade: famous coastal viewpoint with dramatic cliffs, sea arches, and ocean views.
  • Popular nearby beaches include Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo, Praia dos Estudantes, and Meia Praia.
  • Cliff beaches on the west side are less than a 10-minute walk from the apartment. You can walk to half a dozen beaches along your way to Ponta da Piedade
  • Beach conditions can vary; check signs and swim safely.
  • To reach Meia Praia (the long beach you see from the window) on foot, walk along the canal to the pedestrian bridge. Cross, then continue down toward the boardwalks and beaches. In summer, there is usually a small ferry boat across the canal for about EUR 1. It picks up just off the boardwalk, past the church. In that case, it’s a 5 minute walk to the ferry, a quick crossing, and you are at Meia Praia.
  • Lagos marina is a popular starting point for boat tours, grotto tours, dolphin-watching trips, and kayaking along the cliffs. We’d recommend taking a small boat to do the grotto tours. The small boats can get in nooks and crannies where the large boats can’t go.
